Cinematic Sound Design & Adaptive Music

The goal was to create an immersive, dynamic sound experience that enhances player engagement and amplifies the game's intensity. From distinct environmental ambiances and character-driven voices to layered SFX and epic music.

Dynamic Sound Design Approach

When designing the soundscape, we aimed to immerse players in a world where every sound enhances the gameplay experience. Our goal was to make players feel powerful, surrounded by distinct, character-rich sounds while ensuring clarity amidst the chaotic elements. Achieving this required thoughtful layering and dynamic sound coverage across all elements.

Environmental Soundscapes

The environment is more than just background noise—it’s a living, breathing part of the experience. From the echoing organ room to the unsettling catacombs, every room features tailored ambient and action-specific sounds. Door SFX vary based on materials and significance, while ricochet sounds shift with surface types, creating a rich, immersive atmosphere that reacts to the player’s actions.

Character and Creature Voices

Each character’s voice is designed to stand out, giving every creature and NPC its unique identity. To achieve this, we used high-end microphones like the AKG C414 and Neumann M149 and processed voices through analog equipment for richness and depth

Voice Prioritization System
To avoid overlapping dialogue and maintain clarity, we implemented a priority system:

  • God – distant, grand, and all-encompassing.
  • Boss – angry and dominant, but distinct from God.
  • Priest – intimate and close, reflecting the player’s personal journey.
This system ensures that voices never compete for attention, preserving immersion and clarity.

SFX Design: Organic Meets Supernatural

Our SFX library is built on creativity and experimentation. By crushing tomatoes, peppers, oranges, and celery, we created visceral gore sounds with a realistic, organic feel. Additionally, natural objects were used to craft sci-fi sounds, blending everyday materials with high-impact effects to ground the supernatural in realism.

Epic and Adaptive Music

The game’s original score was composed with orchestration tailored to enhance epic encounters and key narrative moments. In addition, tracks from the band Obesity add a gritty, raw energy. The music system dynamically shifts between themes based on designer input for each encounter, ensuring seamless transitions and a handcrafted auditory experience tailored to gameplay moments.

Overall creating the sound for Spray and Pray was an amazing experience that required all of my discipline and talent, to make the game sound unique and grand. -JP

Mixing & Mastering for Immersion

To maintain clarity and amplify epicness, extensive time was devoted to mixing and mastering. Sound priorities shift dynamically based on camera direction (azimuth) and player distance, ensuring essential sounds dominate when needed. Automated EQ sidechaining and reverb levels further enhance clarity, creating a layered, dynamic soundscape where no detail is lost, and every moment is amplified to its fullest potential.

By blending thoughtful design, innovative techniques, and dynamic systems, our sound design enhances every aspect of gameplay, making players not just participants but integral parts of a powerful, living world.
